Dear Younger Self: Teach Me How to Live in the Moment Again

Dear Younger Self: Teach Me How to Live in the Moment Again

My younger self had it all figured out.

She knew the things that brought her joy and did them. From creating to dancing, writing, smiling, and helping others, these activities were woven into the fabric of her daily life.

She knew that there was beauty in every moment because every moment was completely new, its own standalone entity. She saw beauty in every moment, recognizing each one as a unique, standalone experience. Going to bed at night and waking up in the morning were just opportunities to continue doing what she loved. The future wasn't a concern because the present was so richly full.

At that moment, the only priority was spending hours on the family room floor cutting strips of paper and turning them into dresses. Performing plies in dance class occupied all of her attention because that was what she was focusing on at the time. Twirling around like a Powerpuff Girl at recess was the highlight of her day because that was her reality.

I can see the lines between what I valued and found joy in as a child and my current vision and purpose. It's not just about recognizing the gifts and values I held but also about understanding the beauty of living fully in the present. My younger self knew that thinking about what was going to happen the next day or five years from now wasn't incredibly important; living and experiencing life was.

So, yes, my younger self always knew she was an artist and always had a heart for making a difference in the lives of others.

But she also had a life perspective that I sometimes struggle to tap into now. She understood that the most precious moments should be fully experienced without distraction or worry about what's next. She knew that being present was essential for not missing out. Younger Tanesha knew that the present moment was the most important one.

When did she forget that? When do we forget that? And how do we get back to it?

Sure, through meditation, spending time with God, and collaborating with a coach. But the first step is recognizing that we've always had the ability to be fully present. We've had moments in our youth where our sole responsibility was just to be and exist. It's inside of us. We might have to dig deep or tap into memories that don't surface easily when we think of our younger selves. However, somewhere in that memory bank is proof that we knew what life was supposed to be like and actually experienced it.
