As a multi-passionate professional, I always have a lot going on. It's my preference. Maybe it stems from being an only child, where keeping myself occupied was essential to escape boredom. Now, as an adult, I thrive on juggling multiple books to read, various projects to write, and sometimes even multi-tasking while on a plane to Vegas, watching Marry Me at the same time that I’m writing this article. (We need to discuss this Church music scene with the nuns… what in the world?). Some see it as multi-tasking; I see it as maximizing my time and efforts.

For those with multiple businesses, working a full-time job with side hustles or balancing creative pursuits alongside our primary income source, prioritizing and making decisions about what to work on and when can be tricky. Adding the layer of being a Christian makes it even more complex. Fun.

Luckily, the Bible discusses the importance of diversifying, so hey, if you’ve got a lot going on, you’re doing it right! God wants us to maximize the gifts He gave us. We have a responsibility to leverage these gifts not only for our sake but in service to others.

However, it’s not always clear what we’re supposed to work on and when. Sometimes, it feels like God isn’t even telling us which project to focus on or if we should focus on it in the first place. We must trust that there’s a reason we’re here and that He gave us these ideas.

Really, though. With us being called to obey, how do we know if the fashion that we’re obeying is the way that He wants us to? How can we be certain that He’s saying to pour into this project but wait on another one? What is the formula for prioritization, and what is God really saying?

Just like JLo's character experiences in Marry Me, prioritizing and balancing is a part of life that we get to navigate. Here are some things that have come to mind when what He is saying doesn’t make sense or feel right, and when I'm in the middle of navigating this multi-passioned life, I have the opportunity to live.

Keep God at the Center: He needs a seat at the table. Moses wouldn’t have gone anywhere without God’s presence tagging along. We have to do the same thing, even when God says to stay right where we are, instead of pursuing something that seems like the best possible option for us. Whether it’s writing a book, starting a franchise, or taking on a promotion, if God’s not in it, we shouldn’t be either. Confirm with God before prioritizing any task.

Obey God’s Directions: I can't be alone when I say that this is sometimes my least favorite part. My thoughts are usually along the lines of, "You can't be serious, God?". My Pastor made a bold declaration that obeying is an indication of how much we love God. After confirmation comes obedience. If God says to prioritize one project and set another aside, we must follow through as partners, even if it’s not what we want. We actually have to do it, y’all!

Trust in God’s Plan: Even if it doesn’t always make sense, trust that God has a purpose. Whether it’s devoting 40 hours to a full-time gig and another 40 to a side hustle or dividing time among various businesses and passions, know that His guidance has a reason.

Stay Grounded in Prayer: When there is so much going on, it’s the hardest for me to hear God clearly. When juggling multiple projects, spending time with God can easily get pushed to the back burner. Make prayer and scripture study a priority, especially when life gets busy. When we can hear Him clearly, we can better prioritize our tasks. When it gets too much, we need to be right there. When it’s going great, we need to be right there. God wants it all.

Embrace the Journey, but don't do it alone: Juggling multiple projects while trying to create the life we want, honor our values, fulfill our God-given purposes, and maintain a relationship with Him is a lot. But we don’t have to do it alone. Seeking support from coaches, spiritual mentors, friends, and family on this journey allows for growth, reinforcement of the next steps, and accountability to make the impact we wish to make. Working with a Christian coach has helped me significantly prioritize, keep things in perspective, and ensure God’s rooted in it all. It’s a journey, and I mess up all the time, but we get a chance to learn and grow alongside God.
